Biography

Della Pollock is a Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, specializing in the areas of Performance and Cultural Studies.  She is the author of Telling Bodies Performing Birth:  Everyday Narratives of Childbirth (Columbia University Press, 1999), and editor of Exceptional Spaces:  Essays in Performance and History (University of North Carolina Press, 1998) and Remembering:  Oral History Performance (Palgrave/Macmillan, 2005).  She is also Executive Director of the Marian Cheek Jackson Center for Saving and Making History, an independent non-profit dedicated to honoring, renewing, building the historically Black neighborhoods of Northside and Pine Knolls in Chapel Hill.  Pollock’s research interests include oral history performance, performance ethnography, cultural performance, performance for justice and policy change, memory/remembering, biopolitics and embodiment, community development, and critical cultural theory.
