Associate Professor Kelly Ryoo is seeking temporary research assistants (RAs) who can help her research team during data collection at low-income middle schools from 9/16 – 9/30.
School 1 is about 34.5 miles from the UNC School of Education (SOE) (about 50-55 min).
School 2 is about 9 miles from the UNC SOE (about 15-20 min).
RAs will assist our research team in collecting data from middle school classrooms where culturally and linguistically diverse students use visualization technologies to learn abstract scientific concepts.
Duration & Hours
This position requires 6-25 hours of work per week. A minimum of 6 hours per week is required.
We prefer students who have the most availability or who can help at least two periods per day.
The number of hours are flexible, but your pay will be different based on your experience and availability (see Hourly Rate).
Hourly Rate
$9-$12 depending on prior experience and availability (we are looking for students who can be at the site consistently)
Driving time will be paid.
Schedule
School 1 is about 34.5 miles from the UNC School of Education (SOE) (about 50-55 min).
For Period 1, you need to arrive at the site at least 20 minutes before the first period starts.
The periods are listed below:
Period 1: 8:00am – 8:55am
Period 2: 9:00am – 9:55am
Period 3A: 11:25am – 12:25pm
Period 3B: 11:25am – 12pm, 12:45pm – 1:05pm
Period 4: 1:55pm – 2:55pm
School 2 is about 9 miles from the UNC SOE (about 15-20 minutes). You need to arrive at the site at least 20 minutes before the first period starts. The periods are listed below:
Period 1: 10:40am – 11:50am
Period 2: 12:29pm – 1:29pm
Period 3: 1:32pm – 2:32pm
Period 4: 2:35pm – 3:35pm

Minimum Qualifications
Qualified candidates must have the following:
- CURRENTLY enrolled at UNC-CH (We CANNOT hire students who graduated)
- Your OWN transportation to and from the research site (no public transportation available)
- Completion of the IRB CITI training (group 2: Group 2 Social and Behavioral Research) (https://research.unc.edu/human-research-ethics/getting-started/training/.)
- Experience working with middle or high school students in formal and/or informal learning settings (e.g., teaching, tutoring, coaching, etc.)
- Must be available for a short interview (in-person or virtual) between today until 9/4
- Must attend training sessions IN PERSON before the first day
- Must be able to come in to be added to payroll before 9/12 with necessary documents (e.g., passport OR driver’s license + SSN)
- If you are already on the payroll for SOE, you may be able to skip this. Contact the PI if you think you are on payroll.
- You must be responsible and on time.
- Must be able to work at least 6 hours per week (NOT including driving time)
Preferred Qualifications
NOT required for employment, but will be considered during application review:
- Availability on high need days.
- Availability work for more than 2 periods consistently (e.g., P1 and P2 from Tue-Fri)
- Previous teaching experience in K-12 classroom settings in the U.S.
