Dan researches theatre for social change and the role of performance in activism and political organizing focusing on issues of identity and micropolitics. While his undergraduate thesis explored the semiotics of 1960s avant-garde theatre, his master’s thesis used ethnography to examine how a social movement called “InterPlay” uses performative play to rehearse and enact alternative social formations. In addition to his scholarly work, he devises and directs theatrical productions and is an active practitioner of Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed.
