Lambda Pi Eta (LPH)

Brief Overview

Lambda Pi Eta is the official honor society of the National Communication Association (NCA). As a member of the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS), LPH has over 400 active chapters at four-year colleges and universities worldwide. LPH was founded in 1985 at the University of Arkansas, became a part of the National Communication Association (NCA) in 1988, and the official honor society of the NCA in July 1995.

LPH represents what Aristotle described in his book, Rhetoric, as the three ingredients of persuasion: Logos (Lambda) meaning logic, Pathos (Pi) relating to emotion, and Ethos (Eta) defined as character, credibility and ethics (Information quoted from the National Communication Association’s Lambda Pi Eta homepage).

The Theta Kappa chapter of Lambda Pi Eta at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was chartered in 1999 to continue the tradition and uphold excellence in the discipline of Communication.

 

Induction Period

The induction period for Lambda Pi Eta occurs each fall semester in September and each spring semester in January. Eligible students (see Eligibility requirements) will be contacted and be presented with the opportunity to join the organization. Interested students will be able to participate in a small induction ceremony in April. Students will have the opportunity to hold office within the organization in the subsequent school year, if applicable.

Goals

The Goals of Lambda Pi Eta Include:

  • Recognizing, fostering and rewarding outstanding scholastic achievement in Communication Studies
  • Stimulating interest in the field of Communication Studies
  • Promoting and encouraging professional development among Communication Studies majors
  • Providing an opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas in the field of Communication Studies
  • Establishing and maintaining closer relationships between faculty and students
  • Exploring options for graduate education in Communication Studies

 

Eligibility Requirements

Students Must Have:

  • Completed 60 semester credit-hours
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 for all courses taken
  • At least a 3.50 GPA for all Communication courses
  • Completed the equivalent of 12 semester credit-hours (18 quarter credit-hours) in Communication
  • An enrollment status of “good standing,” as determined by the institution’s policies.
  • In addition, students should display commitment to the discipline of Communication, as evidenced by active participation in activities that contribute to: 1) the department; 2) the discipline; 3) fellow students; and 4) the community.
