The play’s characters struggle to identify themselves to one another as they attempt to extract a single idea from MARTA that the Overcoding Machine, CON, wants. Meanwhile, MARTA is compelled to follow a path of chaos and creative production, a path that will render her incomprehensible to her coded counterparts. Inspired by Felix Guattari’s unproduced screenplay, A Love of UIQ, and the dystopic, surrealist work of Harlan Ellison, this play explores concepts like surveillance and security, despotic machines, and the revolutionary task of thinking.
Performance features Steve Wiley of NC state, Sabrina Ahmed, Kyle Mears, Khadijah Wiggins, and more! The show’s talented design includes Katherine Guiness (lighting), Grant Ballmer (sound), and Rob Hamilton (set) while being a bit happily carried away by Paul Klee.

Noise Emerges as Art in UNC’s Studio 6 Series Presentation of Decoding
Chapel Hill, North Carolina—UNC’s Studio 6 Performance Series presents Decoding, a new play based on the philosophical work of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari.
The characters struggle to identify themselves to one another as they attempt to extract a single idea from Marta that the overcoding machine, Con, wants. Meanwhile, Marta is compelled to follow a path of chaos and creative production, a path that will render her incomprehensible to her coded counterparts. Inspired by Felix Guattari’s unproduced screenplay, A Love of UIQ, and the dystopic, surrealist work of Harlan Ellison, this play explores concepts like surveillance and security, despotic machines, and the revolutionary task of thinking.
Director of the show, Susan Ryan, is excited for expert and layman audiences alike to use the production as an entryway into the labyrinthine ideas of Deleuze and Guattari. “It seems counterintuitive to depend on something like storytelling to grapple with their philosophy. Most people associate Deleuze and Guattari with mere noise-making, but it’s not that simple. It’s not anti-semiotic. There’s sense-making and nonsense-making underway. Audiences will be able to follow conflicts between empathetic characters, but they’ll only really be able to float above stable ground…It’s a ‘touch-and-go’ experience for the actors and the viewers alike.”
Designers of the show have been encouraged to use lighting, sound, and music in a bold way. Whereas usually these mediums are there to help along the narrative on stage, Ryan explains each design element will assert its own agency. Among the design team, Sound Designer, Grant Bollmer (NC State), and Lighting Designer, Katherine Guinness (UNC) are scholars familiar with the work of Deleuze and Guattari. “I’ve always been inspired by Deleuze and Guattari in my research and writing, so it’s been fun to apply that to make something so different. They work in scholarship and in design by emphasizing complexity.”
The show opens Friday, April 13 at 8 p.m. at Studio 6 Theatre (Swain Hall) on UNC’s campus, and runs Saturday, April 14 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 15 at 3 p.m. Donations will be accepted at the door for the Orange County Arts Commission, an organization dedicated to supporting local arts education and arts activism.
