This award was established in 1987 in honor of a professor in the Department of Communication Studies. His teaching of African and African-American literature and personal influence and examples inspired his students in academic and cultural endeavors. It is given annually to the junior or senior in the department who is judged by a faculty committee to be most outstanding in performance of African and African-American literature. (Nominations and selection by faculty in Performance Studies. A special selection form is then sent to the Chancellor’s office by a Performance Studies representative in March.
