The American Heart Association has an excellent opportunity for a Communications & Marketing Intern in our Durham office for the fall semester. This role has a very high degree of creative freedom and visibility, and it requires abilities in multiple areas, including communications, marketing, public relations, social media, event planning, thought leadership, content creation and relationship management. This unpaid internship offers strong opportunities to build a professional portfolio and make potential job placement contacts within the community. Individuals participating in the internship program are provided with an opportunity to gain important and practical job skills to be successful in a non-profit environment along with an opportunity to explore a career-path with a reputable voluntary health/service organization. Completing an internship with the Association will enrich your academic and professional resume as well as your personal life by making a difference in the lives of others.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Candidates who are juniors or seniors pursuing a degree in communications, public relations, or marketing with an interest in non-profit and health care communications.
• Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communications skills.
• Mastery of the major social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram and X.
• Ability to maintain professionalism in a corporate or non-profit environment and assume responsibility for guiding projects and programs from inception through completion.
• Demonstrated skills in effective one-on-one and group communications and comfort with working with all levels of community leaders, volunteers and staff.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities.
• Intermediate to excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
• Intermediate to excellent proficiency in Canva with strong graphic design skills.
• Minimum availability of 12-15 hours/week.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future.
• Required Equipment: Reliable WiFi Connection.

Responsibilities
• Collaborate with teams across the Marketing and Communications, Development and Community Impact departments, and throughout the Association.
• Provide support to and collaborate with the Marketing Communications lead through various marketing communications strategies and tactics, such as media pitching, handling social media content creation and execution, supporting the organization’s communication efforts with all audiences, and performing administrative and core marketing duties.
• Assist staff at American Heart Association events.
• Assist in drafting a wide variety of Marketing Communications materials to promote campaigns, events, and programs (e.g., new releases, advertisements, internal tools, photos, videos, toolkits, infographics or other multimedia).
• Provide ideas to support strategic marketing, public relations and corporate communications.
• Research potential media collaborators and opportunities to advance the Association’s priorities.
• Support the implementation and execution of marketing and communications plans.
• Assist in creating content for the Association’s social media accounts which include Facebook, Instagram and X.
