The UNC Department of Communication welcomed four-time primetime Emmy nominated actress and alum Sharon Lawrence back to Chapel Hill for A Conversation with Sharon Lawrence. The event was held November 9th at 6:00pm in Murphey Hall in front of a live audience of students, faculty and the general public as part of an evolving Alumni Spotlight Speaker series. Joseph Megel, Artist in Residence and Director of The Process Series, moderated the conversation and guided discussion detailing Lawrence’s journey from UNC to the Broadway stage to the TV screen.

Following the Q&A session of the night, Sharon Lawrence was awarded a department honor for Outstanding Alumni in recognition of her magnificent career and incredible support of the Department of Communication, formerly Radio, Television and Motion Pictures.

Ms. Lawrence also visited with students during her visit and offered several aspiring screenwriters advice on how to write strong female protagonists.

According to her IMDB page, Sharon Lawrence has received over 100 acting credits and is most known for her role as A.D.A. Sylvia Costas, A.D.A. Sylvia Costas-Sipowicz on NYPD Blue, airing from 1993 to 1999. Her latest work includes her role as Lorna Prescott on OWN’s, Queen Sugar and Margo in Showtime’s Shameless.
