The Department of Communication joins the many voices expressing horror and outrage at the murders of eight people, six of them women of Asian descent, in Atlanta on March 16, 2021. As a department committed to social justice and equity, we are acutely aware that racisms, sexisms, homophobias, and xenophobias are part of white supremacism, and we are committed to dismantling these systems of oppression through our collective research, teaching and service. We stand with Asian and Asian-American faculty, students, and colleagues in solidarity and grief, and offer our every support. We affirm the recent statement by Dr. Heidi Kim of the Asian American Center, and we encourage all to listen to and uplift the voices of Asian American women and men who have been targets of increasing violence during this past year, as we work collectively toward justice.
The University is offering the following services for anyone needing support: Counseling and Psychological Services and the Employee Assistance Program. Please visit the UNC Asian American Center for additional resources.
