On July 22, 2019, UNC Chapel Hill University Communications announced a new Carolina research center, the Center for Information, Technology, and Public Life, CITAP. The announcement posting on the UNC College of Arts & Science website stated the center “will answer defining questions about the changing nature of society and politics in the digital age.”

Department of Communication Assistant Professor Alice Marwick will be “one of four faculty members leading the center.” According to Professor Marwick, “We’re in a time where anyone can create information and put it out on the internet. Conspiracy theories, hoaxes, rumors, fake news – these things are all rampant.”

The announcement explains CITAP “will combine a variety of discipline and research methods to understand digital media’s impact on people, communities, and social systems,” while giving “students valuable insights into emerging fields and prepare them to critically analyze information as technology evolves.”
