On February 15, members of the Department of Communication faculty presented to a delegation from the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). Members included Professor Cori Dauber, department’s Media Lab director and lecturer Mark Robinson, Professor Alice Marwick, Professor Michael Waltman, and visiting professor Kemal Itler. The article “UNC-Chapel Hill Hosts International Visitor Leadership Program on Countering Violent Extremism,” published by UNC Global, lists the presentation topics to include “social media, the use of narratives and counter-narratives, community outreach and engagement, perspectives, and the importance of youth involvement.”

In response to the presentation, Professor Dauber stated, “This meeting was incredibly valuable, because while all the delegates were interested in the insights made possible by our research, each of them had different perspectives and were facing unique sets of challenges at home. By hearing exactly what situations they were facing, we have a much better change of thinking through real world solutions.”
