Ali is a doctoral student preparing for comprehensive examinations whose research interests include rhetoric, social movements and the processes of democratization and conflict resolution in the Middle East. He is interested in the relation of rhetorical performances and political structures during periods of authoritarian erosion in which a democratic opposition emerges. He hopes to understand better how different modes of argumentation, persuasion and conversation can create alternative formations of publics and affect political deliberation mechanisms.
