If you have any questions feel free to contact us at (919) 962-2311. Also, here is an FAQ that you may find helpful:

Is there parking?
Yes. Parking is free that day and abundant around the venue including spots for disability; S9 & S11 would be the closest lots.

How early should I arrive?
At least 15 minutes in advance.

Are there tickets?
No. You may bring as many guests as you like.

Is there assigned seating?
No. Sit wherever you like.

If I graduate in the summer or fall, may I attend?
Yes. You may attend the spring commencement before or after your actual graduation.

Will my name be in the program?
Yes. Undergraduates that have applied for spring graduation with advising will be supplied to us by the registrar’s office and included in the program.

Will they call my name out?
Yes. You will fill out a card and the announcer will use this to call you across the stage.

Will I get my diploma?
Sort of. You will be handed a mock one on stage and your real one will be mailed to you months later.

Do I have to wear a cap/gown?
No, but most people do. You may wear whatever you like.

Is there a photographer?
Yes, for still pictures but not video. We will have one hired who will contact you via the card you fill out. Feel free to bring your own camera as well.

Will there be a reception?
No.

How long is it?
Generally 1.5 hours, no more than 2.

Who will be speaking?

Dennis Mumby, Department Chair
Michael Waltman, Director of Undergraduate Studies
Carole Blair, Director of Graduate Studies

Adapted by Rob Hamilton
March 29 & 30 at 8 PM in Swain Studio 6 Theater
FREE and Open to the PublicIn the vernacular of magicians everywhere; nothing is as it appears.Daniel Wallace’s Mr. Sebastian and the Negro Magician tells of the tragedy of Henry Walker, a sideshow magician who has spent his life trying to regain everything he thinks he lost, only to lose, in the end, himself. This stage adaptation — The Misdirection of Henry Walker — when produced will use puppets to best illustrate the ever-shifting perception of reality that drives Henry’s narrative.

Featuring Steve Dobbins, Mary Forester, Anna Marie Gutierrez, Nilan Johnson, Doug Pass, Rajeev Rajendran, Leslie Shuman, Allen Tedder, and Mike Wiley.

You are invited to be a part of a new and exciting work for live performance prior to a planned production next season: audience feedback from these readings will be instrumental in The Misdirection of Henry Walker’s ongoing development.

Rob Hamilton is Lecturer/Designer/TD for Communication Studies at UNC. His adaptation of Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress was cited for Best Adaptation and Best Production Design by the Independent Weekly, and he will be appearing in the world premiere of Basil Twist’s The Rite of Spring at Memorial Hall April 12 & 13.

ACTIVATED ART AT THE ACKLAND MUSEUM

By popular demand, the Ackland Art Museum at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is again presenting “ekphrastic theater” in its galleries. Through an upcoming series of live theater performances entitled ACTIVATED ART, works of art in the Ackland’s permanent collection may be experienced in unexpected and thought-provoking ways.

Ekphrasis is a rhetorical device in which one artistic medium attempts to define the essence of another, giving a work further life by telling its perceived story. Each performance of ACTIVATED ART comprises five ten-minute plays, each inspired by a different work of art in the Ackland Art Museum’s permanent collection.

Created by University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill professor Dana Coen and written by four North Carolina writers—Dana Coen, Howard L. Craft, Ian Finley, and Marianne Gingher—and the first-place winner of a student play-writing competition, Wynton Wong, these original plays construct dramatic narratives perceived in painting and sculpture, in an effort to capture the works’ most essential nature.

The five plays presented at each ACTIVATED ART 2013 performance are:

The Spectacle of our Misery by Dana Coen

The Minstrel by Howard L. Craft

The Interior of the Oude Kerk, Amsterdam by Ian Finley

Art Class by Marianne Gingher and Deborah Seabrooke

Switch by Wynton Andrea Wong.

The plays will be performed in the Ackland’s galleries, in front of the art that inspired them. A discussion with the playwrights and directors follows the two Friday evening performances.

Performances:

Friday, 5 April, 8:00 PM – Discussion with Playwrights.

Saturday, 6 April, 8:00 PM

Sunday, 7 April, 6:00 PM

Friday, 19 April, 8:00 PM – Discussion with playwrights.

Saturday, 20 April, 6:00 PM

Sunday, 21 April, 8:00 PM

Tickets:

Tickets are $10 each and may be purchased in person at the Ackland Museum Store, on the corner of Franklin and Columbia Streets, in downtown Chapel Hill, or by phone: 919.962.0216.

“I think in the last two decades we’ve realized how important space is, and in the last decade it has been the issue of collaborative space – space where people across disciplines can work together…in much more non-traditional ways” said Susan Nutter.

She is credited as the key visionary behind the James B. Hunt Library. Nutter works as the vice provost and director of libraries at N.C. State. Under her leadership, N.C. State’s libraries climbed from 101 in the nation to 27, according to the Association of Research Libraries.

Librarians, architects and educators everywhere are taking notice of the new state-of-the-art space. So much so that Hunt Library has had to create a new position – the visitor experience librarian – to handle the massive number of guests.

Clymer Cease, the managing principal at the architecture firm Pearce, Brinkley, Cease, and Lee, said that in many university libraries, most of the books don’t get checked out more often than once every few decades.

“By putting the books in the vault, we’re storing them in a dry, very quiet secure place, so that once every 30 years when somebody wants to look at that book, it’s there and it’s in great shape,” he said.

Barbara Moran, the Louis Round Wilson Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Information and Library Science, said that technology has completely changed libraries and the ways we use them.

“Going up to the stacks and looking at books and serendipitously finding new material is a lot of fun,” she said. “But it’s so very convenient to look it up in an online catalogue and sometimes even have the librarian to fetch the book for you.”

Now, at N.C. State’s Hunt Library, students can cut out the middleman and just have a robot do the job for them.
