Curriculum Vitae

BA (English), University of Manitoba; MFA (Communication Design), Nova Scotia College of Art & Design; PhD (Communication Studies), McGill. Media and Technology Studies. Professor Thomas does research at the intersection of materialist media theory, information studies and social computing, examining in particular the conceptual grounds of datafication. His forthcoming book, Becoming-social in a Networked Age, reads our collective reliance on graph data structures—a key abstraction at work in social media platforms, search engines, and AI assistants—as an engineering relationship to philosophy, productive of what he calls “formatted subjects”. His teaching interests include communication and social theory, media technologies, and algorithmic cultures.
